very visual intense piece
I was in Boston this summer and saw this show. It was the first time I had ever heard of Barry McGee. I enjoyed the wide range of materials he uses and the work’s collaborative nature. There was randomness in it’s spirit…which harks back to the anarchistic “street art” of the 80s. I particularly liked the vibrant mosaic wall pieces, and the video art towers. Reminded me of when I was making multi-monitor video art back then, using a collage technique and image processing. I did question how the work loses some of it’s power set in the white walled official spaces of the ICA. But then, I have always had a problem with the impersonality of most modern galleries and how modern art is displayed. Barry McGee currently has a show of related works which just opened at Cheim and Reid in NewYork. Worth checking out.
